On September 27, 2014, anti-human trafficking organization, [free-them], had their 5th Annual Freedom Walk in Toronto and their Inaugural Freedom Walk in Ottawa presented by The Fairmont Royal York to raise money for victims of human trafficking in Canada. This year, on September 27th, marks the fifth time the Free-Them initiative will band in solidarity to raise awareness against human trafficking and slavery. Hundreds of volunteers and advocates for freedom will march around the downtown core of Toronto and Ottawa waving banners, chanting rhymes and causing a stir. This year marks the 20th year of celebration for human rights activism. It is a day which implicitly calls upon all those who believe in equity and freedom, to gather and participate in the discourse it entices. Public Safety Canada will be hosting a Human Trafficking Web Forum on Thursday, November 21st, 2013 from 12:30pm-3:00pm (EST). For the last 2 months we have been busy little worker bees buzzing around preparing for the Freedom Walk and as Volunteer Coordinator, I was lucky to have had a front row seat for all the behind-the-scenes action. It blows my mind how our Event Coordinator, Sheila Cardenas, is able to take a bunch of ideas and bring them into reality every year. Her leadership is integral to the Walk’s success and this year was very successful. Around 500 people attended and we raised $45,000! Read More
