Early Beginnings: Every Scar Tells a Story Even the Ones You Don’t See

I had so many journals while I was lost, out in the world. Sadly life on the streets steals many things, journals being one of them. All those pages-lost into the place where all thrown away things go. I lost everything.

I remember being in the parlor room. I was a little girl, getting little-girl attention but some of that attention was not the kind any mother would want their child to get. No real parent was ever present to say anything.

I only recall faint images of the pant fabric from various renters and the odd facial outline that stood out in my mind. One man’s pants, I distinctly remember, were grey trousers and something grew and moved in those pants. He didn’t let me off his lap, and he started to sweat and make quiet grunting noises. I froze, ever so silent until I was released.

I remember not being allowed to go upstairs but I was just a child and children explore, and disobey. A light shone at the bottom of the stairs then faded into darkness. The wooden staircase went half way up to a platform and then took a turn the rest of the way.

The staircase passage was dark and I was afraid but I walked through the darkness towards a light at the end of the hall. It was bright sunshine flooding into the room. I was drawn towards the light, it was really beautiful.

There was an old man who I think was Mr. Balazi sitting on the bed in the room at the very end of the hall. I remember he sat on the edge of the bed, in his brown flannel pants and one of those standard white undershirts men of his age used to wear. His suspenders were hanging off his shoulders and his feet barely touched the floor.
